The NIHR HRC-DDR is co-located with the Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC). Initially established with part-funding from European Regional Development Funds, MD-TEC is a dedicated, state-of-the-art medical device and technology usability testing facility.
The NIHR HRC-DDR and MD-TEC are strategically aligned and overseen by Professor Tom-Clutton Brock, Clinical Director. Together, we are ideally placed to support companies, and clinical entrepreneurs navigate the complex journey of health technology development.
MD-TEC is located within the Institute of Translational Medicine. Technology developers can access a fully equipped operating room with cutting-edge surgical and anaesthetic equipment. There is also a configurable ward area which can be set up as a critical care unit, an emergency department, or a more general ward. There is a large configurable space for use as an outpatient clinic, physiotherapy unit or domestic living space.
Usability testing involves the latest patient simulators and phantoms to minimise study requirements and allow companies to rapidly evaluate product iterations and avoid costly design mistakes. We simulate comprehensive clinical scenarios with healthcare professionals specific to the product’s end-user. Studies can be live-streamed and recorded for remote viewing using multi-angle HD/4K video equipment.
